Aston Villa could be set for a dramatic shake-up before the Premier League season kicks off, with Jacob Ramsey on the verge of joining Newcastle United — but financial restrictions from UEFA may leave the club unable to sign a replacement.
Ramsey’s Exit Gathering Pace
The 24-year-old midfielder has expressed his desire to move to St James’ Park, and negotiations between Villa and Newcastle are well underway. The Magpies want Ramsey in their squad before their opening league fixture — ironically against Villa — in just two days’ time.
According to Birmingham Live, the deal is expected to be worth around £40 million, and Eddie Howe sees Ramsey as the perfect addition to his midfield.
Villa Target Arsenal’s Trossard
In preparation for Ramsey’s departure, Villa have made an enquiry for Leandro Trossard. The Belgian forward has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal following the arrival of Noni Madueke from Chelsea and could be available at a reduced price, with just a year left on his contract.
Trossard, 30, has attracted interest from Bayern Munich, but is currently recovering from an injury and remains doubtful for Arsenal’s season opener against Manchester United. His versatility — able to play both centrally and on the left — makes him an appealing short-term option for Unai Emery.
UEFA Rules Threaten Transfer Plans
Despite the Ramsey sale freeing up funds, Villa’s hands may be tied. The club is bound by a UEFA squad cost ratio ruling, which limits wage spending to 70% of revenue for teams in European competitions.
After being fined €11 million (£9.5m) in July for exceeding the 80% threshold in 2024, Villa have agreed to strict spending controls. Finance experts suggest these commitments will prevent the club from reinvesting Ramsey’s fee unless further high-value sales are made.
Journalist Tom Collomosse has reported that, due to these constraints, Villa are unlikely to bring in new players unless another major departure — potentially Morgan Rogers — occurs. Rogers, valued at over £50 million, has been linked with Chelsea but remains a key figure at Villa Park.
Possible Further Departures
With winger Leon Bailey also tipped for a move, Villa’s attack could face significant disruption. Should both Bailey and Ramsey depart, Emery may be forced to rely on internal options or youth players to fill the gaps — unless the club relaxes its stance on selling Rogers.
Outlook:
Villa’s hopes of returning to the Champions League after last season’s narrow miss could hinge on how they navigate the final weeks of the transfer window. While Ramsey’s exit appears imminent, whether Trossard — or any replacement — arrives remains uncertain under UEFA’s financial watch.
