A sad day for Hangzhou Greentown supporters as Australian superstar Tim Cahill formally announced his departure from the team. On social media the legendary number 4 posted he wishes to spend more time with his family. It is not sure if this means his retirement from professional football.
Cahill has become one of the highest profile footballers in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), earning over 90 caps and scoring 47 goals for his country. He was the first Australian to score at a FIFA World Cup. Cahill has scored in three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) and has scored the most goals by any Australian in the World Cup with five goals. In 2007 he became the first Australian player to score at an AFC Asian Cup.
Before joing Hangzhou Greentown Cahill enjoyed a very succesful carreer in Europe. With over 400 games for Millwall and Everton the all-time Australia topscorer has become a widely recognized name. After leaving Europe for a short stay in the MLS Cahill arrived in the Super League at Shanghai Shenhua.
After being told he was no longer part of the current Shenhua’s coaches plans Cahill terminated his contract and signed with Hangzhou Greentown. The young Super League team have been a constant joy to watch in the last few matches with Cahill leading the charges.
Earlier today local media reported Greentown are looking at Jiangsu’s Sammir as a replacement for Cahill.
